Crews to set bridge beams for South Mountain Freeway interchange

PHOENIX – The installation of large bridge girders at the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway interchange will require a weekend closure of westbound Interstate 10 in west Phoenix and intermittent closures of eastbound I-10, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

These will be the first girders to completely span over 59th Avenue and westbound Interstate 10 for the interchange that will connect Loop 202 with I-10 by late 2019.

Motorists should allow extra travel time, plan ahead and consider alternate routes to avoid restrictions needed to allow two large cranes to safely hoist and place 168-foot-long, 165,000-pound girders supporting the flyover ramp from northbound Loop 202 to westbound I-10.

Westbound I-10 will be closed between 51st and 67th avenues from 10 p.m. Friday, July 20, to 5 a.m. Monday, July 23. Traffic exiting at 51st Avenue can detour along the new westbound I-10 access road, as well as Van Buren Street or McDowell Road, before re-entering I-10 at 67th Avenue.

Eastbound I-10 will be narrowed to two lanes and will close intermittently for up to 15 minutes each time as needed at 59th Avenue from 9 p.m. Friday, July 20, to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 21.

In addition, 59th Avenue will be closed in both directions between McDowell Road and Van Buren Street, although the westbound I-10 access road between 51st and 67th avenues will remain open.

Motorists should consider alternate routes, including the Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway) west of Interstate 17 or exiting I-10 sooner and taking local streets before re-entering the freeway beyond the closure points.

The westbound I-10 on-ramps at 35th and 43rd avenues will be closed as well to help reduce traffic backups.
